The next morning, Morgan went down to breakfast at her usual time. With Justin as a guest here, she didn’t have any choice but to face him.

I’m willing to wait for that day, he’d told her. She’d stayed awake most of the night, reliving his words and the kisses they’d shared. Although her experiences had been limited, she’d never before felt this close to a man. But it was different than when she was with Ryan. For one, she was older now. Although Ryan came from an affluent family, Justin had never thrown around his wealth. Never made her feel that they didn’t fit together.

It would be so easy to fall in love with the man, but being the woman he needed was another story.

Hearing some commotion, she hurried down the back stairs that led into the kitchen where her parents, were seated at the table with Justin and Lauren.

Lauren spotted her first. “Morgan! You’re here.” The girl ran over to meet her, her dark ponytails swinging back and forth. “I’m going to kindergarten. It’s my first day.”

“That’s right it is. Are you excited?”

The child nodded. Dressed in a pair of jeans and a pink blouse and matching sweater, she looked adorable.

“Delaney and Mary Elisabeth get to go on the bus, but I can’t ’cause Daddy wants to take me.”

Morgan stole a look at the terrible father who wanted the pleasure of taking his child to her first day of school. He was dressed in his uniform of late: jeans and a green crew-neck sweater. Her attention went to his freshly shaven face, and his mouth, and suddenly she recalled his heart-stopping kisses. His silver gaze locked with hers and he smiled.

She glanced away. “Well, looks like you have a problem.” She hesitated a minute, then came up with a solution. “Your daddy just wants to make sure you’re happy in your new school, and meet your teacher. So maybe it would be okay—just this once—if your daddy drives you. And so he can take pictures for your scrapbook, and then you can ride the bus home with your friends.”

The five-year-old pursed her cute mouth. “I guess that’s okay.” She turned and walked to her father. “Daddy, you can take me to school today.”

“Thank you, sweetie.” He looked at Morgan and she had trouble catching her breath. “And thank you,” he whispered as he walked by. “I’ll see you later.”

Morgan worked to regain her composure as she helped Lauren on with her backpack. Then she was rewarded with a hug from the child. “Bye, Morgan.”

“Bye, Lauren. You have a good day in school.”

The girl hugged both the Keenans, then father and daughter left. Morgan went to the coffeemaker and poured herself a cup. When she returned to the table, her parents were watching her.

“What?”

“I was just thinking what a sweet little girl Lauren is,” her father said. “She reminds me a lot of you when you were that age. She knows exactly what she wants…and goes after it.”

“And Justin is such a good father,” her mother added.
